Following the success of our Cork Study Club, I take great pleasure in announcing the date for our Inaugural Limerick Study Club, which will be held on Tuesday the 15th of March at 7pm in the No. 1 Pery Square Hotel, Limerick.  The meetings will be held four times a year, with Wednesdays being the preferred choice.

The first meeting will feature lectures from both myself and my colleague, Dr Traelach Tuohy, Periodontist.  I will aim to introduce the basics of Implant Dentistry, while also discussing the important question of when a tooth should be extracted and when it should be restored.  Implants are usually an option when teeth are missing, but what if a tooth is still in place?  It is easy to decide to keep a tooth when there is sufficient tooth structure to work with.  Likewise, it is easy to extract a tooth in an obviously hopeless situation.  There is however that grey area when tougher choices have to be made.  What is the cut-off point for retaining a tooth?  Saving a tooth with a poor long term prognosis can have a significant impact on the next treatment option, particularly if an implant retained restoration is to be considered.
